Good Scholarship

What does it mean to be a good scholar?
In broad terms, a scholarly approach involves a number of key activities. To be a good scholar, you must first identify, engage with, and understand the ideas and arguments of your subject. To do this you must be really familiar with a wide range of relevant literature in the topic area of your studies. This involves reading in depth and actively interrogating the literature with thoughtful reflection about the significance and implications of these ideas for your work. From this position, you can modify and apply this knowledge and understanding to address new and different situations, using your own words to independently and confidently express the arguments and evidence. This confidence and independence in expressing evidence-based arguments to new problems and situations is the goal of scholarly academic study.
