Pre-sessional English Course

What is the pre-sessional English Course?

A 4-week course designed to prepare non-native speakers of English for university study in Britain

Areas covered:

• conducting effective research in libraries and on the internet
• planning and writing academic essays
• referencing and constructing bibliographies
• reading and writing critically
• giving oral presentations
• listening to lectures and taking notes
• improving vocabulary and grammar

The course has been developed by the QMU Effective Learning Service which provides ongoing support for all students wishing to develop their English language and academic study skills.

Who should attend the course?

Non-native speakers of English with a conditional or an unconditional offer of an undergraduate or postgraduate place at QMU for the coming academic year.

The pre-sessional course is for students who:

• wish to learn more about the requirements of study at a British university
• would like to improve their academic and language skills before beginning their studies
• would like to find out more about life at QMU.

Students with an offer conditional on achieving a certain score in IELTS may, if within 0.5 of the IELTS condition, be able to obtain an unconditional offer by successfully completing the pre-sessional course.

Course details

Four weeks: 21 class hours and one cultural visit per week

Typical weekly timetable:

Monday and Friday: 9:15 am – 12.45 pm

Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday: 9:15 am - 4:15 pm

Friday pm: cultural visit

What does the pre-sessional course cost?

• £875 for four weeks (without accommodation)
• on-campus accommodation may be available (£104-£114 per week)
• further information can be obtained when booking a place
• alternatively students may wish to make their own arrangements off-campus.

When is the pre-sessional?

Monday 13th August – Friday 7th September 2012
